How to Plan a Motorcycle Trip Through Europe

For Mandy Manley, there’s something enchanting about motorcycle travel. Sure, she loves traveling by train and car, but when she’s traveling by motorcycle, there’s nothing between her and the stars, she says. “When it rains, you’re wet. When it’s windy, you get blown around. You smell all the smells and can touch and taste things to really experience your environment in a way that you never could behind glass,” she says. I had never heard of motorcycle travel; I didn’t know you could book motorcycle tours. Until I chatted with Mandy L. Manley, who has taken several motorcycle trips....

The Ultimate Guide to Florence, Italy

From a taking a class on Tuscan wines to planning happy hours for her internship, Annika Meyer jam packed her six weeks of study abroad in Florence, Italy. It’s safe to say that I was drooling over this sorority sister’s Instagram. And I asked her to share her Florence travel guide. I chatted with her about the best Florence finds, day trips and key Italian phrases. Q: If I’m headed to Italy, what things should I be sure to add to my Florence travel guide? Piazza del Michelangelo This is one of the most beautiful overlook views of Florence...

Everything You Need to Know About Traveling to Italy

A summer in Milan spent studying fashion design, image and styling isn’t swinging for the fences; it was a reality for Kaitlin Sheppard.  Most days of the week were spent in class from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., but her weekends took her to Lake Como, Cinque Terra, Rome, Florence and Belluno.  I asked Kait her pro tips on how to travel Italy, and she dished all the deets: Q: How did you save money? A: Money was a bit of a challenge. I had been saving up for quite some time, but I still had a limited amount...

15 Things to Do in Rome

I’d been to Rome once but wasn’t wild about it.  I preferred Florence and small town Assisi, but my second time to Rome redeemed it once and for all.  The first time I went, apparently I was too tired and overheated, but this January, I returned and absolutely loved it! If you’re headed to Rome, here’s 15 things you must tick off your to-do list: Trevi Fountain It’s a classic, but it’s still so stunning.  Our group stopped by the Trevi Fountain at least four times, and the architecture truly is breathtaking.  It’s smushed in the middle of a...

An Italian Wedding & A Swiss Tipi

Now, Sal, we’re leaving everything behind us and entering a new and unknown phase of things. All the years and troubles and kicks—and now this! so that we can safely think of nothing else and just go on ahead with our faces stuck out like this, you see, and understand the world as, really and genuinely speaking, other Americans haven’t done before us—they were here, weren’t they? Dean Moriarty, in jubilant discovery, sputtered those words to Sal Paradise after they came to the new and exciting Mexico. It was unlike anything they had every known. Poetically, I read this section of Jack...

Maddie Koerner on Solo Travel and Life in Europe

An Instagram picture may be worth a thousands words, but influencer Maddie Koerner knows that’s not enough.  “The people that are seeing my pictures aren’t experiencing the excitement I felt when I saw the Eiffel Tower light up or the friendships that I’ve made throughout my journeys,” she said. “This is why I believe traveling is essential for everyone.” Communal travel Maddie spent her summer in Italy as an au pair; she watched the children while the parents were at work and also practiced English with them.  Her work-free weekends included traveling to places such as Bologna, Milan, Portofino,...

Inside the Life of an Au Pair in Europe

Traveling abroad often costs a pretty penny, but several women found their way around that hurdle.  Becoming an au pair opens a door into another culture, and it includes a paycheck.  (Now we’re talking!) Abano, Italy, made sense for Kasey Ervin after enjoying her family vacation to the country several years before as well as studying Italian at her university.  “The country, the sights, the language and the food are all too perfect,” she said. “I wanted to experience the language firsthand and improve my listening and speaking skills.” Like Ervin, Atti Hauer found her job on aupairworld.com.  After...

    ITALY at a glance

Blazing heat overwhelmed my tired frame, but nonetheless the lush, rolling landscapes took my breath away.  By the end of my 10 day European tour, I was exhausted.  Early alarms set for 4 a.m. to make the journey from London to Paris.  Late nights giggling with my roomies in our hotel in Paris.  Miles and miles (and miles!!) of walking.  So, when our night train pulled into the station in Milan, we all arrived in a fog (which probably stemmed from the fact that the previous night had probably been one of the worst experiences of my life).  But...
