Don’t Be Too Resilient

Be strong.  Chin up.  Put on your big girl pants.  I’ve heard ‘em all, and I’ve said these lines, too.  And there is a time to suck it up and keep charging forward, to get the job done.  Life is hard, but what does pouting do?  Get up and do something about it.  I’ve lived by these words, and unfortunately, I’m paying a high price for it.st-elmo-colorado-mountains-travel-round-trip

I’ve just experienced one of the biggest changes in my entire life: moving away from the home I’ve lived in my entire life to a town hours away with all new people, places and routine.  Yes, there were calls home and tears shed.  But for the most part, my approach was: lonely?  Do something about it.  Stressed out?  Get it done.  Overwhelmed?  Drink coffee or take a nap.  Sad?  Drink coffee and journal.  I had a solution for every problem, and that was the problem.  I felt like I had my life together, and on paper, I did.  I had a group of friends I’d recently met and clicked with in a snap.  We grabbed brunch and ice cream together.  We belted out Nelly lyrics in the car.  We giggled over awkward encounters with the gents—whether that was on their part or ours.  I’d also plugged into a church and invested in their community.  I loved my schedule and new routines.  I sincerely thought I had it together; I believed it.

Until I came home for the holidays.  And that’s when it all fell apart.  I’d added these structures like community and routine to my life.  I was standing on these boxes, thinking I would be able to stand in the rain, the wind, the lightning.  I was a rock.  But here’s the thing: those boxes were hollow.  They supported me, but they were still weak, merely because they were new and still needed time to develop strong foundations.  I wish I would’ve known that before my foot slipped into the hollow darkness underneath.griffith-observatory-los-angeles-california-city

Once I came home, I began to realize the incredible life change I’d just experienced.  I’d always known it was a big deal, but I was a big girl.  I could handle it.  I was more than capable, and I’d always been the girl who handled most things in life tactfully and with a head held high.  Life was spinning with change, but I was in control—at least I felt I was.

I was a boomerang, a rubber band who could bounce back from anything life threw at her.  But I snapped.  I’d been too resilient.  I hadn’t allowed myself to grieve the loneliness I kept sweeping underneath the rug.  Although out of breath, I kept running and sprinting towards—I’m not even sure to what.  Until I hit a wall.  At that moment, I acknowledged the brokenness but realized it went further than the bruise from the initial smack into the wall.

Resilience is praised.  And it should be.  But when the going gets tough and our lives begin to drag us across the gravel from a measly rope, resilience only creates friction and more pain.  I wish I would’ve given myself more credit and acknowledged the pain I kept ignoring.  Because it’s been six months since I’ve moved, and I feel like I’m just now beginning to process the hurt and loneliness from August.  I should’ve acknowledged my weakness.  I wish I wouldn’t have kept telling people I was thriving; I wish I hadn’t kept telling myself that I was thriving.  I thought, what’s the sense in being sad about having to start all new friendships from the beginning?  What’s the sense in being overwhelmed at having to start a completely new routine and way of life?  It was up to me to get my life together.  And if my life wasn’t together, that was entirely my fault.nathrop-colorado-sunrise-mountains-morning-travel

Resilience may get you through lots in life, but many other times, it just drives a knife through your skin.  Focusing on the intensity of resilience helps you ignore the scars you’re putting into your own life.  I won’t go so far as to say I’ve wasted these six months, but had I chosen to acknowledge and identify the feelings I’d ignored, maybe they wouldn’t all be catching up with me now.

I like to get things done and right now.  I’m a very black and white Type A person.  Looking back on these past five months, I’ve realized I wanted to shortcut all the emotional and hard BS.  I thought I’d earned a Fast Pass because I’d prepared.  I already knew some people and had a good grasp on my new schedule.  But unfortunately, you can’t fast-forward through life whether you think you’re capable or not.

Indulging in the adventures awaiting you may mean pausing and resting.  While we may equate adventure to movement and progression, sometimes it means taking a chill pill and allowing yourself to be sad, tired, uncomfortable or less busy for a time.  Let yourself be still and not have everything figured out.  Sometimes “turning off” or denying your sadness creates more heartache for the future.  Life is hard, but don’t think that bumps and bruises mean a failed adventure.  Rest in the quiet, and take it all day by day.  It’s okay not be resilient all the time—it’s healthy.

Bises,

Kristin

Kristin, I felt the same way after I first came home for the holidays. For me, I try to pray a lot before I go try to find new things to do. I have to force myself to fin moments of reflection within the “newness”. I go to a new coffee shop and just sit there and read a book or write and reflect. Resting in the quiet means making time to do so! xx.

Hi Imani! Yes, prayer and community are the two things that make this journey much smoother. Reflecting on hard times but still having hope can be hard but is necessary. Coffee shops are the best places to just sit, breathe and write. I think you might enjoy this post about exactly that (https://roundtrip.blog/2016/10/05/finding-my-home-away-from-home/). Thanks for stopping by!

💰I have several bank accounts in the U.S. and France. I'm paid in euros, but I still have recurring subscriptions on my American credit card. I'm also all about growing my savings and getting those credit card points on my American account.

What👏to👏do?👏

❌I tried sending money directly from my French bank account to my American credit card bill. It worked, but there was bigger fee. And it was only to pay off charges, not grow savings.

✅But then a friend introduced me to @TransferWise and now I am set! I can easily transfer between my different checking accounts for the lowest rates I ever did see. Plus, I'm still able to grow my savings and investment accounts in America.

❓OK but what is it?! @TransferWise is a third-party site that transfers money between accounts from all over the world. They price compare their rates with other companies. Their site is super easy to use and explains the whole process. And the rates were crazy low and not as high as the transfer I made directly through my banks.

Have you ever had one of those “it’s a small w Have you ever had one of those “it’s a small world” moments?🌏

☀️Back in 2017, I spent a summer in Toulouse. One weekend, my friends and I went on a road trip to a slew of villages in southwestern France. They were truly some of the best days of my life: we stayed in my friend’s castle🏰(casual), we swam in the river + sunbathed, we drank wine + played games, we explored idyllic villages.

One of my favorite spots with the sweetest of nostalgic memories was in a small village called Laguépie. Population: ~600. Whenever people asked me my favorite place in France, nobody ever knew where I was talking about. It wasn’t in the magazines or travel blogs. (Ahem, it’s on mine!)

➡️Fast forward to 2020. I’m preparing to leave for France and am keeping a close eye on my teaching program’s Facebook page. An American girl posted in the group about her time in Marseille, and we began messaging. She helped me with a million and one things during my move to France, and we’ve stayed in touch and become good friends.

Earlier this month, I visited Albi to see her along with her French boyfriend, who’s from a small village. He never told me the name, but as we were sipping wine and eating saucissons, he said something about Laguépie.

“WHAT?! Did you say Laguépie? I’ve been there and fell in L O V E!” He said, no, we can’t be talking about the same place, no one ever goes to my hometown😂 But after showing him my photos, including ones the village’s castle @chateau_louvielcastel reposted, it was one and the same.

Can someone queue “Invisible String” because what a small world this is that we’re all connected. Do you have any wild stories like that? Tell me in the comments⬇️

✈️I love finding travel destinations + itineraries, easy recipes and decorating ideas. My guess is that you've found some blogs and ideas you love through this site.

😍I'm even more obsessed with how @pinterest serves to grow my blog and brand.

Currently kicking myself for not getting on the Pinterest for Business train sooner because this site is truly a game changer. I went from a personal account with a wedding board and gluten-free board with recipes I’d never tried to a bustling business board with more than 400,000 monthly visitors. And most of that is not from advertising.

📈I took a free @jennakutcher webinar on how to use Pinterest for Business and saw massive growth. And the best part? You can schedule out content for an entire week in just 30 minutes to an hour.

⏩Pinterest is my top driver of traffic, and if you want to upgrade your blog like a pro, this is where you need to invest your time, hands down.

This medieval village enchanted me so much so I almost teared up as we left because I just didn’t want to go. If there are castles, sea views and charm, I’m so there. And Èze checks all these boxes✅

😍This medieval village is a labyrinth of cobblestone and windy paths, but the steps are worth it. There are shops and restaurants along the way to the top where you get sweeping views of the Mediterranean Sea.

🌵Once you make it to the top, you have to pay to enter the Jardin Exotique d’Èze, and I can't recommend it enough. (Be sure to ask about the combo deal that includes both the garden in Èze and the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild nearby.)

How's your sense of direction?↪️🗺️I am th How's your sense of direction?↪️🗺️I am the queen of getting lost — and not on purpose😂

When I lived in Toulouse in 2017, I took a day trip to a nearby town to visit a friend. Wanting to get the best deal, I booked the 6 a.m. train. Unfortunately, I didn't think it all the way through🙃

I left my apartment on time, but when I got to the metro, it hadn't started running yet. I was nervous about getting to the train station on time, but if I hurried, I could make it.

Alas, I made it to the metro stop where I was supposed to switch metro lines. I had one job, and I failed🙈

⚠️I went the wrong direction, and once I realized it, I quickly got off the next stop and ran up to the street. I was unbelievably lost, and the sun hadn't even come up. Eventually, I made it to the train station but had completely missed the train.

And defeated, I sat down in the bakery, cried and FaceTimed my mom. Some kind French girl saw my tears and approached me to help me book a new train.

Since then, I've gotten lost many more times😆 But it's taught me to not be so hard on myself because getting lost is part of the journey. (And if it's not a good time, it's a good story, eh?😜)

I remember when I first decided I wanted to make money from my blog. I thought to myself, I’m not qualified and no one is going to buy this. I’m just a 19 year-old girl!

❌Wrong, wrong, wrong! You have expertise, you have knowledge, you have know-how. Blogging isn’t often a get rich quick scheme; it takes a lot of time and effort. But the fact that you can make money from doing what you love on your own time online is the coolest!

📚When I started monetizing my blog, I started out selling my paperback books, and I made money from these self-published books at the ripe age of 19. I’ve found better luck selling digital products such as ebooks as the profit margins and logistics are much simpler.
