Looking around my room, I’m a little overwhelmed (and embarrassed) with the incredible amount of travel memorabilia and trinkets lying around my room. Vintage posters of Paris and Monaco, luggage tag, passport cover, leather globe journal, Paris canvas, post cards, photos, bags. The list keeps going. And I look forward to when I have my own home to showcase all my travels. And while I love each of these pieces, there’s something to say for handmade items. I purchased each of these items, but adding my own touch of DIY makes my travel decor that much more personal.
For today’s DIY, I need to let you know that my handwriting is nowhere near calligraphy. It’s less than average. And if that’s you, don’t let this scare you away. If you take your time and don’t copy the entire New Testament, you’ll be golden. While a picture can be worth a thousand words, there’s something about a great travel quote or phrases. And with these DIY Travel Prints, you can showcase them in a unique way.
Approximate Time Needed:
15-30 minutes
Items You’ll Need:
- An old book you can tear up
- Black Sharpie/marker
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Frame (optional)
- Black card stock (optional)
How To:
- Carefully tear out a page from your old book. This may take a few tries to get a fairly even rip.
- Find a quote, word or set of coordinates you want to feature on your print. Here’s a list of my 21 favorite quotes about travel. Lightly pencil it onto your piece of paper. When doing so, use the book’s lines of text to make your print look neat and clean.
- Slowly go over the pencil lines with a black Sharpie/marker. As I traced over the words, I thickened the lines with the marker to make the words stand out more. (And it’s an easy way to cover up mistakes!)
- Leave the edges rough or use a pair of scissors to cut along the edge. Hint: use the book’s text as a guide for straight lines.
- To showcase your artwork, feature it in a frame or on a collage/bulletin board. Or you can matte it with black card stock to make a bookmark or simply tape it up by your bed.
